Writing Based on Reading and Listening Directions

First, read a passage about an academic topic. In the actual test, you will have 3 minutes to read the passage. Then listen to a lecture about the same topic.

When the lecture has ended, you can start writing your response. You will have 20 minutes to write. In your response, provide a detailed summary of the lecture and explain how the lecture relates to the reading passage. While you write, you will be able to see the reading passage again. You should try to make your response as complete as possible using information from the lecture and the reading passage.

Now you will see the reading passage. It will be followed by a lecture.

Around 500 C.E., a group known as the Anglo-Saxons immigrated to England from what is now Denmark and Germany and took over political control of England. This history raises an interesting question: Are the modern inhabitants of England descended mostly from the original Celts or from the later Anglo-Saxons? Several pieces of evidence suggest that the modern English people are descended mostly from the Anglo-Saxons.

First, the scale of the Anglo-Saxon immigration was massive. According to some sources written soon after the migration, a majority of Anglo-Saxons had left their homelands and come to England. The parts of Denmark and Germany where the Anglo-Saxons had originally lived lost most of their population. The sources imply that the large numbers of Anglo-Saxons arriving in England overwhelmed the original Celtic population and caused the Celts to retreat to other parts of Great Britain.

Second, the modern English language is derived from the language spoken by the Anglo-Saxon immigrants, not from the language of the original Celtic inhabitants of England. This fact strengthens the theory that the population of England today is mostly descended from Anglo-Saxons.

Third, a genetic study has been recently conducted among inhabitants of several villages in the east of England. The study looked at the villagers’ DNA to determine which groups they were descended from. The study found that the DNA of the villagers was nearly identical to the DNA of people living in the parts of Denmark and Germany where the Anglo-Saxons originally came from. This genetic similarity again confirms the theory that modern-day English people are mainly descended from Anglo-Saxons.

Lecture MP3 is included in the actual test

Writing for an Academic Discussion

For this task, you will read an online discussion. A professor has posted a question about a topic, and some classmates have responded with their ideas.

Write a response that contributes to the discussion. You will have 10 minutes to write your response. It is important to use your own words in the response. Including memorized reasons or examples will result in a lower score.

Professor

What should children be learning in school? Many people believe that time in the classroom should be spent acquiring foundational knowledge in subjects like math, reading, science, and history. Others feel that it's important for a child's creativity to be nurtured, and thus the school curriculum must include classes in art and music. There's so much to learn, yet so little time in school to learn it all! What do you think should be included in the curriculum? Why?

Claire

I agree that traditional subjects like math, science and reading are important, but so are classes in art and music. Engaging with art and music can help children be more creative and can stimulate their imaginations, That in turn facilitates critical thinking, which is essential in any curriculum, so l am in favor of including art and music in the school day.

Kelly

Sure, drawing pictures and listening to music is fun, but children can do that on their own time. The school day is too short as it is, and there is so much foundational knowledge in math, reading, science, and history that children need to learn; it is better to spend classroom time on that foundational knowledge and let kids explore art and music at home.
