Geological Learning by Doing
The FG and PG are exams for professional licensing of geologists administered by ASBOG. Structural geology is a section many struggle through. I get it. It didn't come naturally to me and I know the common mistakes we can all make. My two practice exams of 50 high quality structural geology questions are geared towards learning by doing.
The focus is on computational structural geology problems involving maps. I have focused where most of us need help -- over half of my questions require computation, descriptive geometry, stereonets, and map interpretation.
It mimics the actual questions you will encounter on the FG and PG exam. Questions are written to be thought provoking and fun to aid recall. Rather than printing out black and white exams and having to flip back and forth to check answers you will get instant feedback! All my graphics are original and high quality made in Adobe Illustrator. I have painstakingly included exhaustive explanations to all my problems so you know why you got a question right or wrong.
Topics you'll cover:
Strike and Dip of Beds from a Geological Map
Thickness of Beds from Geological Map
Apparent Dip
Three Point Problems
Quadrant and Azimuthal Conventions
Reading Stereonets
Qualitative Structural Geology
Drill Intercept Problems
I have distilled previous exams and resources ASBOG publishes to present you with just the most relevant structural geology questions that you are likely to see on exam day. Many online ASBOG resources are expensive and require big time commitments. I was inspired to start making practice exams because many reviewers complain of the copious information covered in some of these resources that never shows up on the exam and the steep upfront cost.
Research consistently shows that learning by taking practice tests, also known as "retrieval practice," is a highly effective study strategy that significantly improves memory retention and learning outcomes compared to simply re-reading material, a phenomenon called the "testing effect." This coupled with instant feedback helps you understand the gaps in your knowledge and help you focus your attention on those areas.
Save yourself time and money -- learn by doing.
