Learn Tax Preparation: Tax Forms (8962 & 1095A), Real-World Examples, Infographics, Quizzes & Practice Tests

This course will focus on tax preparation for taxpayers who qualify for the Premium Tax Credit (PTC) under the Affordable Care Act, generally reported on Form 8962.

We will look at each new concept from multiple angles, starting with a presentation discussing the topic and then analyzing practical examples to better understand how the credit is calculated and applied.

The example section will use IRS forms and real-world scenarios to work through problems, helping learners understand how the Premium Tax Credit impacts the actual tax return. Learners will also visualize the calculations using step-by-step methods aligned with IRS worksheets and applicable tax formulas.

Premium Tax Credits introduce a unique set of complexities to tax preparation, especially when there are advance payments, mid-year changes, or shared policy allocations. This course begins by introducing the core concepts of the Premium Tax Credit and walking through foundational terms such as household income, the second-lowest cost silver plan (SLCSP), and contribution amounts using practical examples.

Learners will understand how the Advance Premium Tax Credit (APTC) affects monthly premiums and how to reconcile these amounts on the tax return. We will explore both annual and monthly calculations in detail, using allocation and alternative computation methods for complex scenarios.

The course will guide learners through determining eligibility, applying for the credit, and ultimately completing Form 8962, including reconciling excess credits and understanding repayment limitations.

We will cover how to allocate premium amounts across households, apply special rules for alternative calculations, and correctly identify situations where adjustments are necessary including on supplementary Form 1095-A .

By the end of this course, learners will have a thorough understanding of how to handle Premium Tax Credits with confidence, whether preparing taxes for themselves or others, and will be equipped to tackle both common and complex filing situations involving health insurance subsidies.
