A comparison of essential qualities between behavior analysts and software developers

The field of software engineering long ago created the idea of the 10x developer: superior individuals who are better than their peers in virtually every aspect of their profession and routinely produce significantly better results. While this notion has created quite a mythology about the productivity of these supposedly unparalleled performers, there is good reason to doubt if they actually exist. Even if they do exist, there is reason to believe that the traits that lead to some aspects of their high performance will invariably also contribute to an overall negative effect in the workplace. We will explore the reality of such individuals and potential downsides of their ability to produce such extraordinary results. We will introduce the counter example of the 1x developer: the average every day individual. We will examine the qualities of these 1x developers and their potential benefits in a team oriented environment. These qualities include such traits as sharing resources, maintaining work-life balance, documenting work, respect for colleagues, giving as well as receiving feedback, and continuing the learning process. Finally, we will compare and contrast how these qualities may apply to the field of behavior analysis. This course can be used as 1.5 CEU for individuals registered with the BACB.
